Review: The Hawk In Winter by Bekah Clark

The Hawk In Winter (Rise of the Hawk #1) by Bekah Clark

Like any teenage girl, she wants the boy she loves to return her feelings. But, far greater is at stake than love.

Linna, a servant of her family, who has been living within the Summer Palace most of her life, is another ally. As time passes, Mae realizes that there are worst fates to fear than just the idea of her not being with Jorgan. Her very life is at stake, as well as the fate of her family. Will she triumph or will she break and die?

Review:
Ok, wow. I was hooked from the start, and astonished at how much detail Bekah Clark described with The Hawk In Winter. Her fantasy world is easy to picture with her endless description delivered in clever ways as to avoid long descriptive paragraphs.

I absolutely love the characters. Maevan and Xenya are so strong willed and rebellious and share a kind heart. Every character has a purpose, though it is not always clear from the start what the purpose is, which adds to the aura of mystery.

Jorgan and Coran as best friends was a unique twist on the book. It was kind of like a love triangle, yet not so. Their personalities are so unique, and they share a friendship with Maevan.

I cannot wait to read The Raven In Spring! I sincerely hope Mae and Jorgan get together, I love them so much. Bekah Clark has created a new world with the detail of one from old, showing that she deserves the love. Go and read her books!

EXCERPT:
Xavier turned his back to me, disappearing among the students walking in all directions. I gulped down the lump in my throat, and headed toward my locker on autopilot. I walked straight down the middle of the hallway, students veering around me one way or the other. Each step was like the last, until gravel crunched beneath my boot.
I stopped walking and glanced down. Instead of tile, I saw charred black gravel. When I looked back up, I was standing in a virtual field of the stuff. There was nothing else around me except some hills the same color. The sky was gray and wind blew strands of my hair across my face. When I brushed the hair away, I saw something glint among the rocks near my feet.
I bent down, brushing the blackened dirt away, revealing something silver. I grazed the edge of it with my fingertips, then plunged my fingers into the gravel, pulling out the object. I stood again, my hand wrapped around it. When I glanced up, I was back in the hallway, students parting around me.
Another memory. Each one seemed to get more vivid and real.
But then I felt something cold in my hand.
I slowly unwrapped my fingers, and charcoaled dirt sifted between them onto the floor, leaving behind a 3-D silver serpentine object the size of my palm. My hand shook. That wasn’t just a memory. I’d physically done something. Or, more to the point, I’d gone somewhere. And I was pretty sure it wasn’t on Earth.
I covered the object in my hand again. I took a step forward, totally ready to skip class to go have a meltdown in the bathroom, when someone grabbed my arm, dragging me across the hall into an empty classroom. I wrenched away, facing the guy from detention–who didn’t exist in school records.
“What are you doing?” he hissed. “Didn’t you grow up like this? I thought you’d know better.”

Book #7 of the Bestselling Collapse Series by Summer Lane
SNEAK PEEK:
The dark, dank smell of the cave seeps into my bones and chills my soul. Dim, flickering firelight crawls up the walls, throwing a shadow across my face. I hug my blanket tightly around my shoulders, shivering. It is painfully silent.
There are people everywhere—about thirty of us—but there is no talking. No whispering, no laughing. We are too tired to talk. Too cold. Small fires have been lit here in the cave, but it is hardly enough to remedy the cloying chill of the winter storm.
It is all sharp angles and rocky slopes in here. There is no soft surface, no privacy. Most people are asleep right now. It has become the only way to make the time pass quicker. Waiting, as we are, for the storms to end. For this harsh winter to be over.
But it is not getting better.
It is getting worse.
I cough and shudder. We have been trapped here for weeks. I feel as if the walls are falling down around me, devouring me. I close my eyes tightly, brushing my calloused fingers over the familiar, worn grip of my rifle.
Soon, this will all be over.
Soon, we will all be dead.

Interview with Summer Lane
Topic:

Where Collapse is Headed: And What Happens After!
This is your seventh installment in the Collapse Series! When is the series ending?
The Collapse Series will end at the tenth installment, but that does not mean that the characters are going away forever. The Collapse Series does exactly what it’s name suggests: it follows the collapse of society and civilization. After I’m done with that, I can move to what happens after.
When is Book 8 releasing?
Summer 2016. The next book will take Cassidy somewhere she has never been before – far away, to a place full of surprises. I can’t say too much, because I don’t want to spoil State of Destruction! Let’s just say it will be pretty cold where she’s going.
Any other books?
I announced that I’m working on releasing another series this year, The Bravo Saga. This series follows the adventures of the fierce and loyal Bravo, the German Shepherd companion of Elle Costas in the Zero Trilogy. He’s one of the most popular characters – if not THE most popular – that I have ever created for readers, so I’m excited to share his story next.
How do you write so many books a year?
Hmm. I’m not really sure. I’ve been so incredibly busy for three years – I haven’t stopped to think or breathe. It’s definitely a positive thing, but I will probably start to roll back to 2-3 book releases a year after the Collapse Series has finished. Just so I can have a little downtime between books. It’s important to rest your brain when you’ve been creating non-stop for such a long period of time.

Summer Lane is the #1 Bestselling Author of The Collapse Series and the compelling tie-in novella books of The Zero Trilogy, as well as the upcoming Bravo Saga (releasing Spring 2016). She is also the author of Collapse: The Illustrated Guide, a #1 bestselling graphic companion to her phenomenal original series.
She is the owner of WB Publishing and Writing Belle, an online magazine. Summer is also an accomplished journalist and creative writing teacher.
Summer lives in the Central Valley of California, where she spends her days writing, teaching, and writing some more. When she is not writing, she enjoys leisurely visits with friends at coffee shops, movie dates, reading and spending the day at the beach or mountains.

Review: Ice Like Fire by Sara Raasch

Ice Like Fire (Snow Like Ashes #2) by Sara Raasch
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Goodreads Summary: It’s been three months since the Winterians were freed and Spring’s king, Angra, disappeared—thanks largely to the help of Cordell.

Meira just wants her people to be safe. When Cordellan debt forces the Winterians to dig their mines for payment, they unearth something powerful and possibly dangerous: Primoria’s lost chasm of magic. Theron sees this find as an opportunity—with this much magic, the world can finally stand against threats like Angra. But Meira fears the danger the chasm poses—the last time the world had access to so much magic, it spawned the Decay. So when the king of Cordell orders the two on a mission across the kingdoms of Primoria to discover the chasm’s secrets, Meira plans to use the trip to garner support to keep the chasm shut and Winter safe—even if it means clashing with Theron. But can she do so without endangering the people she loves?

Mather just wants to be free. The horrors inflicted on the Winterians hang fresh and raw in Januari—leaving Winter vulnerable to Cordell’s growing oppression. When Meira leaves to search for allies, he decides to take Winter’s security into his own hands. Can he rebuild his broken kingdom and protect them from new threats?

As the web of power and deception weaves tighter, Theron fights for magic, Mather fights for freedom—and Meira starts to wonder if she should be fighting not just for Winter, but for the world.
Rating: 5+ Stars
Review:  There's nothing for me to say except wow. Ice like Fire definitely wasn't a weak spot in the series, and I liked it better than Snow Like Ashes.

Ice Like Fire continues where Snow Like Ashes left off, and Meira really begins to understand what really happened with Angra and what is happening to her. She is constantly striving to be a better her, but sometimes she ends up pushing her friends away in the process.

It really gets interesting in Ice Like Fire. Sara Raasch introduces most of the other rulers in Primoria, and most have a secret agenda of their own. Enemies turn into allies, friendships are formed, and betrayal is in the air.

I can't wait for Frost Like Night!! I really hope it is well written like Snow Like Ashes and Ice Like Fire. Sara Raasch is fantastic.

Review: Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

Snow Like Ashes (Snow Like Ashes #1) by Sara Raasch
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Goodreads Summary: A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.

Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.

Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.

So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, and serving her kingdom just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.
Rating: 5+ Stars
Review:  I've read a lot of astonishing debuts, especially this year 2015, but Snow Like Ashes is definitely one of the best.

Meira is such a strong, fierce, determined heroine. She wants to be in control of her destiny, and has lots of defiance in her. I absolutely love that Sara Raasch thought of such normal, yet original names for the kingdoms of her world.

When I met Theron, I immediately felt a connection, and in my heart I thought he was the one. It's a close call, but I'm on Theron's side at this point. I really hope the love triangle dissolves peacefully instead of ruining the series.

As I was nearing the end, I realised I had book two; it might not sound like much, but I just love to read series one book after the over. I've waited for a long time to finally read Snow Like Ashes, but I don't regret it. Sara Raasch has created a detailed and deliberate world, and Snow Like Ashes is an amazing debut.

Review: Pretty Little Liars (The Complete Series) by Sara Shepard

Title: Pretty Little Liars (The Complete Series)
Author: Sara Shepard
Rating: 5+ Stars
Review: So, this review is slightly different. I've taken out a few segments, as it wouldn't fit. I decided early on that I would just review the series on a whole as each book was small.

I'm sure a lot of you have watched the popular TV series, Pretty Little Liars. But did you know they were based on books? I myself only found out a few months ago, and I decided that I would read the books first; after all, books are always the best.

When I discovered that there were sixteen books, I was prepared for a few 'drag-along' books. After all, I didn't think it would be possible to write sixteen perfect books in a succession without making them all a stereotype or flawed, but Sara Shepard did it, and she definitely did it well.

Every book was a new mystery introduced, and maybe an old one solved. Every book had the same consistent mystery of the previous book, but with something extra. I literally couldn't stop reading unless I had to. I was utterly, completely hooked.

My favourite character since forever is Aria. If Ali hadn't come into her life, we would probably be the best of friends. I love everything about her; from her flaws to her hidden perfection, I love her.

Spencer, Aria, Hanna and Emily are all so different, and it's definitely chance that they were in the yard that day. Each has a hidden flaw which only surfaces with the help of A.

I'm going to watch all the TV now, and I know you will be too. But please, i urge you to read this amazing series too. These books are way too good to be ignored. Read the series, and watch TV. Sara Shepard is truly fantastic, and she definitely needs the following many authors have.
Recommended for: Anyone who loves a good mystery or contemporary.

Then, I'm going to add any books/tv/movies I've purchased/borrowed, etc.

Books:

-Waterfall (Teardrop #2) by Lauren Kate

Purchased:
-Queen of Kings by Maria Dahvana Headley (@Warehouse Queenstown)

TV:
Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments Season 1 Episode 1 and 2

Really good! Simon is just like the Simon of the books nerdy, cynical, absolute nuisance, I'm still getting used to Clary having lighter hair than in The City of Bones movie, although I like it better and I think Katherine McNamara does a better portrayal of Clary (but that's just my thoughts). Jace starts to show his sarcastic side in episode 2 (at least I thought so); there wasn't too much of his sarcastic side in Episode 1. I really can't wait for the next episode to be released next week!

Pretty Little Liars: Season 2 Episode 18

It's been a week since I watched PLL (I was on holiday) and I really enjoyed coming back to watching it. A still freaks me out. I really want to catch up, so although I spent most of summer break watching Suits, I'm going to try and finish Season 2 before school starts on the 3rd.

Rating: 5+ Stars
Review:
Wow. Outsiders had me hooked from the very start. After finishing the Hush, Hush saga, I needed something to read. I saw Outsiders sitting there, so I began reading.

Jaylen really doesn't fit in, until she discovers that she isn't alone at her new school. She's always been different, but she finds others like her.

Outsiders is a great book. It really took my mind off reality, which has been a struggle for the past few days. I didn't stop reading until I finished.

Tammy Ferebee has set Outsiders in modern day US, but also managed to incorporate another race into it. I really loved Outsiders, and I can't wait to read more from Tammy Ferebee.

EXCERPT:
Prologue
I STUFFED THE SLEEPING BAG down into my backpack with angry, punching motions, sick and tired of having to be here and having to do the same thing over and over again. I hated camping, I hated being organized, and more than anything, I hated what this exercise stood for.

“Don’t do it like that. I told you – you have to conserve the room as best you can. You have to travel as efficiently as possible. Take it out and start over.”
“I don’t see what difference it makes.”
“Trust me, it’s going to be a really big deal to you in the not so distant future.” His voice sounded hollow.
“Says who?” I was being ornery. I knew the answer to the question already.
“Says me, Bryn. And the news. Look around, would you?” He sounded like he was pleading now. “Stop defaulting back to the rebellious young teen act, and get serious. We don’t have enough time to play those games anymore.”
“They’re not games, Dad. I am a teenager. I don’t care what the news jerks and the government say.” I threw my backpack down on the ground. “And it’s not rebellious to not want to play friggin’ survivor in the backyard every day.”
My dad looked at me with a sad expression and sighed, reaching over to pull me into a tight hug. He dropped his nose to my head and inhaled deeply.
My face was pressed up against his shirt, and I could smell his sweat mixed with the sweet scent of his aftershave. My dad always said he was the last of a dying breed, using that stuff. He couldn’t have been more right.
“Maybe it’s not going to happen here … to us.” I said it just to hear the words, but I knew it was only wishful thinking.
I could tell he was getting choked up again when he started talking, his voice now hoarse.
“I wish, more than anything else in this world, that you didn’t have to be standing here with me in this backyard playing survivor.” His whole body started to shake with silent sobs. “Oh, God, Bryn. If I could do anything to change this, anything at all, I would. I swear to God I would. But it’s happening. No one can stop it.”
I put my arms around his waist, letting go of my earlier stubborn anger, now choking back my own tears. “I know, Dad. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it.”
“Yes, you did,” he said, sniffing hard and clearing his throat, shifting to hold me at arm’s length. He was staring at me while he smiled through his tears, giving me that look. The one that always made me confess.
“Okay, so maybe I did mean it. But I’ll shut up about it for a little while.”
“Not for too long, though. You wouldn’t be my daughter if you weren’t complaining about something.”
I tried to slap him playfully but he moved too fast for me. My dad is light on his feet, an expert level-one practitioner of krav maga – a certified badass. He’d only recently taken up camping.
“Pick it up,” he ordered, now back in control of his emotions. “Do it again. Only this time, get the air out of that bag first, condense it down …”
I cut him off. “I know, I know … ‘down into the smallest footprint possible.’ Geez, Dad, I’m not an idiot.”
I shook the sleeping bag out and started rolling it up quickly, using the moves I’d been practicing for four months straight to squeeze it down into a lump the size of a small loaf of bread. I folded the whole thing in half, pushed it to the bottom of the backpack, and then let it unfold itself one time, before putting the other items in on top of it: unbreakable water bottle, half-liter of bleach, square of plastic, cup, hunting knife, and various other tools my father was quite certain I would need … once all the adults in the world had died off, leaving us kids alone to fend for ourselves.

Their empires have fallen, but their mythology lives on…
Zanya Coreandero is a seventeen-year-old orphan with only a single friend and no hope for a normal life. Diagnosed with anxiety and night terrors, no one believes her cuts and bruises are a result of an evil entity, and not a brutal case of self-harm.

With the only home she’s ever known being the isolated institution—where breakfast is a handful of medications, the psychiatry sessions are mandatory, and her every move is watched—the only relief is her red-haired roommate named Tara, who’s more like a little sister than her best friend.

Free will is strong, but destiny is stronger…

When Zanya is kidnapped, she meets a group of gifted Mayan descendants, each with a unique ability. Gone from a nameless castaway to the only hope of mankind, Zanya is forced to make a grueling decision: bond with an enchanted stone and save humanity from rising underworld forces, or watch helplessly as Earth falls victim to a familiar dark deity from her dreams. This time, he’s playing for keeps.

A wicked secret hides behind a handsome face…

When Arwan, a dark-eyed timebender, takes interest in Zanya's mission, it's unclear if his intention is to help, or if he's on a hell-bent mission for revenge. Wary of falling for another guy with major secrets and a tainted past, Zanya fights to keep her distance. If only her heart gave her a choice.

A long-time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa began her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and feature articles to delve into the whimsical world of fiction.

Since then, Theresa has been married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and has been repeatedly guilt-tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having traveled to over a dozen countries—not to mention an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. Wherever life brings her, Theresa will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.

Review:
I enjoyed every moment of Perceptions. Just like Omens and Visions, I just couldn't stop reading. Kelley Armstrong has kept me reading with every book of hers that I've read so far (this is number nine).

Gabriel, Ricky and Olivia are an intriguing love triangle and by far the most complicated one I've ever seen. I'm so for Gabriel, but Olivia isn't, which often frustrates me. Gabriel and Ricky are almost complete opposites. I used to think Cainsville was a trilogy, until I realised it was a series, which is good, because I needed another book, and to find out that there were at least two more coming was a relief to me.

Perceptions continues right where Visions left off, with a perfect recount of the few days at the end of Visions, which really helped me remember Visions with the long days of missing the series. I quickly remembered the final events of Visions, and the rest came soon after, which really helped me to rapidly get into Perceptions.

Kelley Armstrong clearly knows what she's doing when she writes. her flawless plot lines show that she is nothing but a pro when it comes to writing. Kelley Armstrong hasn't let me down, ever, and I love her for that.
