The Selection

Title: The Selection (The Selection #1)
Author: Kiera Cass
Summary: For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself--and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined. .

Review: Stunning. From the 1st word, sentence, paragraph, page, chapter... Kiera Cass hooked me from the start. As for the Selection- I loved it. The great character personalities, the strong, distinct personalities, and the way they fit, the way they fit perfectly. The Selection is brilliant. It stuns and dazzles, so that even the idea is complex and creative. America Singer is an amazing character, and she (Kiera Cass) narrates the story brilliantly. To be honest, this is actually one of the few books I didn't find a flaw in. Yes, really. I didn't find. A. Single. Flaw. Maybe I was just too devoted to The Selection. Maybe I just didn't think there was anything wrong with The Selection. But from the start, I have heard multiple things about Kiera Cass' The Selection, ranging from "It was amazing, brilliant" to "It was terrible". But what I expected was completely wrong. The Selection, to me, was better than most books. it was a surprise. I couldn't put it down, not at all. Kiera Cass also perfectly crafts her love triangle, very cleverly. America, Maxon, and Aspen couldn't be a better love triangle. I'd definitely recommend the Selection.

Recommended for: Fans of interesting and contrasted books with complex and interesting ideas.

Because life is like bull riding--when it sends you to the dirt, you do whatever it takes to get on your feet, even if you have to crawl. Reece could have stayed in the dust, wallowing. Instead, she fixed Lonesome Point in her rearview, joined the pro circuit, and never looked back. But now a serious injury threatens to end her career and she's back in Lonesome Point, living next door to the family that once made her life a living hell.

After multiple tours of duty in Afghanistan and his father's death, all Grayson Parker wants is to get his family's cattle business back in the black and live a quiet life. Movie Review: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies

Title: The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies (based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien)
Rating: 9/10 Stars
IMDB Summary: Bilbo and Company are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the Lonely Mountain from falling into the hands of a rising darkness.
Review: So, now I sadly admit that I haven't read The Hobbit! This was the final of the three films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. I really enjoyed it. This movie wraps up the trilogy and finishes it all. Wow it was good. Sad, but amazing. This movie is one of my top picks for sure. It's really a powerful movie although really quite sad.

Excerpt:

Hate is a very strong word. In fact, there are a myriad of reasons why one should avoid the vicious feeling. But at this very moment, I'd never felt more hatred toward another being. I couldn't stop the bubbling revulsion if I tried. Its dark tendrils spread through me like a cancer, grasping at every cell, seeping from every pore. It filled me with an unexplainable sadness and pain.
In just a single moment, I'd lost everything. My dreams and my future were shattered. He stole my free will and made me a slave. That's all I was now… a pawn who would eventually be used for destruction.
Lucifer had become the enemy of my soul. He took me to a place I never wanted to go; shrouded in darkness and internal suffering. Outwardly, I bore the marks of his fingers, which he'd wrapped tightly around my neck, nearly squeezing the life from me. The look of pure hate and murderous intent, burning bright in his wicked eyes, was imprinted in memory. It felt like a dream. I could only have wished it was, but the pain was too real.
Just outside my door I was surrounded by everyone I loved, and yet, I'd never felt more alone. They were so close, but I had become disconnected, muted, unwillingly sworn to silence. It was killing me inside, and I couldn't do anything about it. I had to submit. I had no choice. I wouldn't risk any of their lives. As much as I wanted to let them know why I was acting indifferent, I wouldn't speak a word.

Son

Sorry for the holdup.

Title: Son (The Giver Quartet #4)
Author: Lois Lowry
Summary: They called her Water Claire. When she washed up on their shore, no one knew that she came from a society where emotions and colors didn’t exist. That she had become a Vessel at age thirteen. That she had carried a Product at age fourteen. That it had been stolen from her body. Claire had a son. But what became of him she never knew. What was his name? Was he even alive? She was supposed to forget him, but that was impossible. Now Claire will stop at nothing to find her child, even if it means making an unimaginable sacrifice.

Son thrusts readers once again into the chilling world of the Newbery Medal winning book, The Giver, as well as Gathering Blue and Messengerwhere a new hero emerges. In this thrilling series finale, the startling and long-awaited conclusion to Lois Lowry’s epic tale culminates in a final clash between good and evil.

Review: Stunning. Lois Lowry has created an amazing novel again, the best of The Giver Quartet. This time Lois Lowry combines the stories of The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Messenger in one to make another with a brilliant and moving tale with a fabulous and rightful ending. Lois Lowry knows how to captivate and stun millions. Son is written to conclude The Giver Quartet, and does so amazingly. The Giver was good. Gathering Blue was great. Messenger was Brilliant. They got better and better. And no, Son isn't good. Son is Amazing. Intoxicating. brilliant. Very well written. I genuinely loved Son, which twists and entwines the books previous to it in The Giver Quartet. Son provokes much thought, even after the world of The Giver has been put to sleep, and there is no more to read, no more to enjoy. Claire's story completely fits the worlds of The Giver, Gathering Blue, and messenger. Things you suspect are finally all revealed in Son. Lois Lowry is definitely deserving of her numerous awards, medals and prizes. her writing is too good for her not to earn ant/ The lovely world she has created will still thrive in reader's imagination.

Book Blitz: Storm Fall by Tracy Banghart

Title: Storm Fall by Tracy Banghart
(Rebel Wing #2)
Published by: Alloy Entertainment
Publication date: December 16th 2014
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Synopsis:

In the action-packed sequel to Rebel Wing, Aris battles for life and love . . . and not everyone will survive.
Aris Haan gave up everything to join the Atalantan Military: her family, her boyfriend, even her identity. In the end, though, it didn’t matter that she was a war hero. When the all-male Military discovered that she was actually a woman, she was sent home and erased from history.
Now she has a chance to go back to the battlefield—as herself. But as hard as it was to be a soldier in disguise, it’s even more difficult now. The men in her unit undermine her at every turn. The Safaran army has spies everywhere, perhaps even on Aris’s stationpoint. And she’s falling for her mysterious superior officer, Milek. But their relationship is forbidden, just stolen moments between training sessions and missions. There’s no room for love in war.
Then Aris discovers that Safara’s leaders have set their sights on her, Atalanta’s hero. And she must find them before they find her . .

Purchase:

In my Rebel Wing series, the main character, Aris, is what I’d consider a strong female character. In fact, there are a LOT of strong women in the books. But Aris isn’t aware of her own strength at the beginning of the first book. She has to find her way. I think there are a lot of different ways a character can be strong, whether it be physically, like Katniss, or through sacrifice, like Beauty in the story of Beauty and the Beast – she takes her father’s place, willingly, even though she thinks the beast is going to kill her! And then you have those characters who don’t start strong, but grow and change as the book goes along.

Here’s a list of my favorite strong female characters. They’re not necessarily the “typical” go-to’s, but I think that if you like reading about strong women, you’ll enjoy these books!

My 10 Favorite Books with Strong Female Main Characters

STORM FALL PLAYLIST

Normally, I use the same approach to music with every book I write. I begin the process with a long playlist that includes whole albums, and as I’m writing, the songs that stick out and resonate with me get copied into another, shorter playlist, which I then listen to over and over again as I revise.

With STORM FALL, I wrote the manuscript very quickly, so I skipped right to the shorter playlist. The songs on this list aren’t all thematically connected to the book, though some are (the songs from Mulan definitely connect with the themes of the Rebel Wing series). A lot of times, music clicks for me based on its general vibe, rather than lyrics.

Here’s the list of the songs I listened to the most while writing STORM FALL, with a little breakdown on what appealed to me about each one. I hope you enjoy!

  1. Breath of Life – Florence + The Machine
I write to Florence a LOT. Her music makes it onto almost every writing playlist I have because it’s so dramatic. It really gets the creative juices flowing! Breath of Life began every STORM FALL writing session because it was ominous, cinematic, and driving. Perhaps that gives a hint to the type of story STORM FALL is?

“To get a dream of life again / A little vision of the sun in the end”

  1. I’ll Make a Man Out of You – Mulan Soundtrack
The Rebel Wing series is about a girl who infiltrates her country’s all-male military, so this song fits pretty much perfectly. Also, it’s super fun to sing along to. It pumps me up!

“Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?
You're the saddest bunch I ever met
But you can bet before we're through
Mister, I'll make a man out of you”

  1. Radioactive – Imagine Dragons
This song resonated with a lot of the early, ominous scenes.

“I raise my flags, don my clothes / It's a revolution, I suppose”

  1. Devil’s Backbone – The Civil Wars
The eerie, gritty vibe of this song worked well with the darker sections of STORM FALL, though the lyrics don’t really fit with what happens in the story.

“Give me the burden, give me the blame / I’ll shoulder the load, and I’ll swallow the shame”

  1. Best of You – Anastacia
This is from Anastacia’s “It’s A Man’s World” album, where she covers iconic songs by male singers. It’s a badass album, and this song works for all the badass women kicking butt in STORM FALL.

“My head is giving me life or death
But I can't choose
I swear I'll never give in
I refuse”

  1. Demons – Imagine Dragons
This song makes me think of Dysis and her relationship with Lieutenant Daakon. They both have a lot of demons.

“Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how”

  1. From This Valley – The Civil Wars
This song calls to mind scenes later in the book. That’s all I’ll say. ;-)

“Oh won't you take me from this valley
To that mountain high above
Oh I will pray, pray, pray till I see your smiling face”

  1. Use Somebody – Anastacia
Another one that fits the girls-kicking-butt vibe.

“Off in the night, while you live it up, I'm off to sleep / Waging wars to shape the poet and the beat”

  1. Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus
This is Dysis’s jam. Sadly.

“I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was wreck me”

  1. Reflection  - Mulan Soundtrack
So much of the entire series comes down to identity. How does Aris fit within her world – how do women in general fit within her world?

“Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?

Must I pretend that I am someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show, who I am inside?”

Take a listen to the soundtrack below! I hope you enjoy!
