Outsiders (Outsiders #1) by Tammy Ferebee
Goodreads Summary: Something greater than human…

Jaylen Hayes knows that she is different from all other seventeen-year-old girls. Possessing extraordinary intelligence, she is also uncannily powerful and inexplicably hated by wild animals. But it is not until she transfers to Trinity High that she learns the truth about who—and what—she really is.

Instinctively drawn to two new classmates—the intense and passionate Indigo, and the charismatic and breathtakingly gorgeous Michael—Jaylen soon learns the shocking secret of their shared heritage, and the bloodline that extends to the stars. However, all is not what it seems, and Jaylen soon finds her newfound security threatened when a trusted friend becomes a dangerous and vengeful enemy.

Review:
Wow. Outsiders had me hooked from the very start. After finishing the Hush, Hush saga, I needed something to read. I saw Outsiders sitting there, so I began reading.

Jaylen really doesn't fit in, until she discovers that she isn't alone at her new school. She's always been different, but she finds others like her.

Outsiders is a great book. It really took my mind off reality, which has been a struggle for the past few days. I didn't stop reading until I finished.

Tammy Ferebee has set Outsiders in modern day US, but also managed to incorporate another race into it. I really loved Outsiders, and I can't wait to read more from Tammy Ferebee.

Interview:

1. What made you decide to write Outsiders?

I wrote Outsiders because I wanted to create a diverse novel that crossed genres. I wanted to create something that I would’ve enjoyed as a teenager. In addition to those reasons, the characters kept talking to me. I liked how different they were, and I was excited to put them on paper.

2. What else do you do besides writing?

Aside from writing, I enjoy goofing off with my kids, reading, visiting museums, binge-watching my favorite shows, and talking endlessly about orca whales.

3. What do you hate about writing?

There’s nothing I really hate about writing other than writer’s block. When I want to write, but I can’t get the creativity to flow, or my thoughts just feel too jumbled to understand, I feel miserable. Writer’s block sucks!

4. How did you come up with the idea of Outsiders?

It’s hard to explain because the characters kind of wrote this for me. The idea wasn’t fully developed before I started writing. I had characters that were talking to me and I wanted to do something with them. I guess the idea came from them. I decided to create Outsiders because of the awesome characters, but the awesome characters created the story.

5. What genres do you like to read?

I enjoy dark fiction, contemporary fiction, some romance, some historical, classics every once in awhile, and non-fiction, dependent upon the topic.

6. What is your favourite place to write?

My favorite place to write is in bed. I do write in many other places, but my most comfortable, favorite place is in my comfy, cozy bed.

7. What do you do while you write? (e.g. Listen to music)

Sometimes, I listen to music while I write, but mostly I let the TV play in the background with the sound muted. Seeing the character’s faces and behaviors helps me to better describe my own characters.

8. Do you concentrate better in complete silence, or with background?

I concentrate better in silence or in a fairly quiet environment. If I have music playing, I don’t blast it. If something is on, it can’t be so loud that I can’t hear my own thoughts.

9. Reading or Writing, and why?

I prefer writing. Creating stories brings me peace, happiness, and keeps me excited. There is something special about creating. I love to read, but I prefer to create.

10. How do you respond to negative reviews?

I haven’t received negative reviews, yet, but I have received unpleasant feedback. For example, there are people who wish that I didn’t bring any religious talk into the book at all. I don’t personally respond to anyone’s opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own feelings. I simply keep writing, let the positive feedback encourage me, and I continue to take risks. Everyone one, regardless of what they look like or believe in deserves to see themselves in a book. Regardless of the feedback, I just keep writing!
